CIPLA: Monster Energy Co. v. Cavaliers Hockey Holdings, LLC
On Thursday, October 14, Barack Ferrazzano Intellectual Property partner Thomas M. Williams and Senior Vice President and General Counsel of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Margaret “Meg” Murray, presented a case analysis at the Cleveland Intellectual Property Law Association’s monthly meeting regarding Monster Energy Co. v. Cavaliers Hockey Holdings, LLC. Earlier this year, the Cleveland Monsters professional hockey franchise successfully defended trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings brought by energy drink maker, Monster Energy Co., before the USPTO Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Tom and Meg shared some of their insights and experiences from the Monsters’ nearly three-year long battle to victory, which included a full trial on the merits.

Tom Williams served as lead counsel to the Cleveland Monsters in the Monster Energy case. Meg Murray serves as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of the Cleveland Cavaliers. In this capacity, she also manages the legal affairs for the Cleveland Monsters, a professional ice hockey team in the American Hockey League (AHL). The team began play in 2007 and since 2015 has served as the top affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League (NHL).
