Our History
In Chicago in 1984, our founding partners – two highly respected law professors at Northwestern University and two former members of a prominent Chicago firm – founded BFKN. They were soon joined by like-minded colleagues also seeking an alternative to the large law firm environment. The firm has continued to be centered around the founders’ vision and has grown and evolved into a sophisticated, first-class legal practice with a diverse client roster of national and international clients.
BFKN has developed into a world class law firm, not through mergers and acquisitions but through hard work, attention to client wants and needs, and a collegial and entrepreneurial culture. At the same time, our attorneys appreciate the ability to have the work life balance they could not find at a large law firm.
Since its inception in 1984, BFKN has remained steadfast in its mission to provide exceptional legal representation and guidance to individuals, businesses, and organizations across the globe. Today, BFKN has more than 120 attorneys in eleven practice groups, with nine of those groups having anywhere between three and six sub-groups. BFKN regularly serves a wide array of industries, but has particular experience serving: Luxury, Financial Services & Fintech, Manufacturing & Distribution, Motor Vehicle, Private Equity & Venture Capital, and Real Estate.
