International Delegates Discuss Sustaining Cybersecurity & Anti-Money Laundering in the Philippines
On June 14, 2019, Barack Ferrazzano Financial Institutions Group Regulatory Section Leader John M. Geiringer hosted delegates representing various government entities from the Philippines for a U.S. Department of State open discussion exchange entitled, “Sustaining Cybersecurity: A Project for the Philippines.” This session addressed international challenges and best practices in cybersecurity and anti-money laundering, with a focus on the banking sector. John was joined by Bruce de'Medici, principal at Grey Oar, a firm that facilitates growth in biotechnology, cybersecurity, environmental, and healthcare spaces.
Coordinated by WorldChicago – a nonprofit organization that facilitates citizen diplomacy – the delegation was invited through the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), a professional exchange program funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, which offers participants concrete opportunities to actively engage in international diplomacy and impact the global dialogue on a variety of pressing issues. John was contacted by the Department of State for his significant experience in cybersecurity and anti-money laundering.
Topics discussed in this session included strengthening cyber policies and legislation, improving institutional coordination on cybersecurity issues, and encouraging adoption of a multi-stakeholder approach to cyber regulation. The participants also discussed best practices in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing.
