Rob Shapiro Discusses Supreme Court's Ruling on Chicagoland Assault Weapons Ban
Barack Ferrazzano partner Rob Shapiro appeared on CLTV's Politics Tonight to discuss the Supreme Court's decision not to hear a challenge to the assault weapons ban in the Chicagoland suburb of Highland Park and the implications of the court's decision. Rob clarified the Supreme Court did not make a specific ruling to uphold the ban, but rather it did not have the consensus needed to hear the case, thereby allowing the lower court's assault weapons ban to stand. Rob explained this is standard for the Supreme Court's decision making process, as it will only get involved if clarification is needed for decisions made by the courts below. He also stated this decision answers the question if there are still municipalities which can regulate the use of firearms. Furthermore, Rob described this could represent a shift in the Court's opinion of assault weapons in the future. Also discussed in the interview was President Obama's address regarding the San Bernardino mass shooting tragedy, its relation to gun control and Congress' possible actions going forward.
