Rob Shapiro Comments on U.S. & Cuban Relations Following the U.S. Embassy's Opening in Havana
Barack Ferrazzano Partner Rob Shapiro appeared on CLTV's Politics Tonight to discuss the outlook on U.S. and Cuban relations after a milestone moment for the previously contentious countries. For the first time in 54 years, the U.S. flag was raised in Cuba following the opening of the U.S. Embassy in Havana on August 14, 2015. Rob discusses the Obama administration's intentions for this symbolic display, explaining it is not the conclusion of a long-standing issue but rather the beginning of a process to re-establish ties with Cuba and open relations with its current regime. Although restrictions on democracy still currently exist in Cuba, Rob comments that having a U.S. presence and talking with Cubans on ways to improve the regime are the best ways we can bring change to the country to possibly lessen restrictions and any further tension. The discussion also touches on several other topics, including how this could play into the upcoming presidential campaigns, the likelihood of lifting the trade embargo, as well as the impact U.S. companies and brands could have on Cuban liberalism.
