Summer Associate Program
Who We Look For
Barack Ferrazzano typically hires two to three 2L summer associates each year. Thus, we limit our on-campus search efforts to a small number of top-tier law schools. We also participate in select job fairs and off-campus interview programs.
We encourage top 2Ls and 3Ls at other top-tier law schools to forward their resumes for consideration. In general, we seek well-rounded law students who have excelled in their academic pursuits.
How We Recruit
We send lawyers from our Recruiting Committee to conduct each on-campus interview. Selected candidates are invited to spend a half-day at our offices, either ending or beginning with lunch. Travel expenses are reimbursed in accordance with NALP procedures.
We aim to provide our summer associates with an experience akin to that of a first-year associate at our Firm. In fact, for those candidates we invite to join us as summer associates, it is our underlying intention to extend permanent offers. For this reason, we invest a great deal of time, attention, resources, and senior-level guidance in those individuals we select as summer associates.
The structure of our program gives summer associates an opportunity to witness how we practice law and gain a strong sense for the collegial atmosphere we have nurtured. It also validates the individual's ability to consistently deliver high-caliber work product and, at the same time, ensures that the individual will make a valuable contribution to our diverse environment.
The Program's Structure
Summer Program Coordination
A Firm attorney chairs the summer program and is responsible for interfacing with the attorneys and staff to make sure the program runs smoothly. The chair also serves as a liaison between summer associates and other attorneys. Presently Owen Smith, a partner in our Litigation Group, chairs our Summer Associate program.
Summer associates are paid the same salary as our first-year associates, on a prorated basis. As with other major firms, students who accept a permanent offer of employment with our Firm receive a summer stipend during the summer of their bar exam.
Summer associates are given challenging assignments that are consistent with first-year associate work. Summer associates have the opportunity to, among other things, perform research, draft pleadings, briefs, agreements and other transactional documents, and assist with closings. Because we are committed to exposing summer associates to our style, our practice, and our people, we often invite them to attend closings, client meetings, business trips, court appearances, and other important client-related proceedings.
Practice Area Rotation
We do not have any formal rotation during the summer program. Nevertheless, our goal is to afford summer associates the opportunity to work closely with many different attorneys, thereby exposing them to a variety of practice areas. However, we are aware that determining one's area of focus can be a difficult decision, and we try to accommodate preferences for certain types of work.
The Fun Stuff
Preserving a friendly, respectful atmosphere is very important to us. Barack Ferrazzano's summertime social activities reflect this spirit, as we take time to kick back and enjoy each other's company. Although events vary from year to year, we typically plan firm-wide events involving all attorneys and staff, as well as several smaller events that facilitate more interaction between attorneys and summer associates. We also encourage impromptu lunches and other outings. Summer associates are free to attend as many or as few of these events as they wish.
