Ray concentrates his practice on complex commercial litigation matters.

Ray’s litigation practice spans a broad array of commercial disputes, including litigation concerning securities laws, intellectual property rights, director and officer liability and breach of commercial contract claims. He has a particular focus on litigation involving derivative securities. He has also frequently been retained prior to litigation to help resolve disputes before lawsuits are filed or structure an overall strategy for handling business disputes that are likely to result in litigation.

Ray has acted as lead counsel in multi-district litigation and many state and federal class action suits. He has extensive jury trial experience in federal and state courts throughout the country. He also has experience in many forms of alternative dispute resolution. He has at times been retained to work solely on the trial phase of major commercial litigation. He has served as an arbitrator and expert witness.  He has argued appeals before the 5th, 7th and 8th Circuit Courts of Appeals.

Representative Matters

  • Chevron v. Motiva Enterprises and Equilon Enterprises

    Represented Motiva and Equilon in an arbitration with Chevron concerning indemnities between Texaco Oil Company and its joint venture partners Equilon and Motiva.

  • Paul Rosen, et al. v. Refco, Inc.

    Represented a group of investors in a failed cash to futures arbitrage program. All investors suffered multimillion dollar losses as victims of a Ponzi scheme.

  • Siegel v. Shell Oil Co.

    Represented Shell in class action in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, alleging oligopolistic control over prices in retail gasoline market.
