Overview

BFKN is deeply saddened to share the news of former partner Howard A. Nagelberg’s death on July 1, 2023.

Howard joined BFKN in 1995. When working with clients, Howard was skillful, thoughtful, and ingenious in his ideas and practices. He knew how to craft a transaction to meet his client’s needs and how to accomplish the client’s goals with any transaction. Howard was a trusted attorney and advisor to all clients, with an in-depth understanding of his clients' businesses, and an intuitive knowledge of their goals and needs. Howard developed client relationships that lasted for decades.

Howard was also a true mentor to many of the attorneys in BFKN’s Real Estate Group. He enjoyed teaching attorneys who were skilled and committed to their practices. He was eternally supportive and made time for everyone who wanted to be mentored. He enabled young attorneys to develop skills and capabilities that guided them in their careers.

Howard also taught real estate law as an adjunct professor at Northwestern University Law School for more than 10 years. He was awarded the Best Adjunct Professor Award on three different occasions – the award was established in 1996 to honor the teaching excellence of adjunct faculty members and the winner is selected each spring by second-year, third-year, and graduate students.

Outside of the office, Howard was very devoted to his family, faith and community. He was married to his wife, Sandy, for more than 50 years, and was a doting and very present and involved father and grandfather. Howard loved sports and travel. He was active in his community, both through his synagogue and his many charitable endeavors, including his service as a former board member of Windy City Playhouse.

Our firm, and the clients he served, are better for Howard’s efforts and tireless dedication, and he will be deeply missed by all of us. We will remember Howard always and have his family in our hearts forever.
